Remotely Connecting to CARS Using Mindterm
1. You must be using Internet Explorer 4 or later as your browser and have an internet service provider. If you will be using a Macintosh, you will need OS 8.0 or higher with the MRJ (Macintosh Runtime for Java) package installed.
2. In order to verify that the Java runtime environment is enabled in your browser:
A. If using Windows:
1) From the Start menu, select the Settings/Control Panel option.
2) Double click on the Internet Options Control Panel and select the Advanced tab.
3) Scroll down to Microsoft (orJava) VM and click in each of the three Java boxes.
4) Close the Internet Properties window by clicking on the OK box.
5) Close the Control Panel window by clicking in the upper right close box [X].
B. If using a Mac:
1) Launch Internet Explorer.
2) Select the preferences option from the Edit menu.
3) Under the Web browser section on the left side of the window, select Java.
4) In the Java Options section, enable all except Alert on exception.
5) Close the Internet Explorer Preferences window by clicking on the OK box.
3. Save and close any work you have open and restart your computer.
4. When your computer is restarted, launch your web browser and connect to the following site:
http://genesis.admin.bethel.edu/mtongen.html
5. Mindterm will automatically load on your computer and open a terminal session window to CARS on genesis.
6. When you are prompted for a login, enter your CARS login name and press <Enter>.
7. Now enter your password and press <Enter>.
8. You should now see the “Message of the day” displayed on your screen, along with other information about the CARS system.
9. Use this connection just as you would a local connection. Once you are logged in, you can switch to the parent browser window and redirect it to one of Bethel’s web based mail servers:
mail.admin.bethel.edu for Administrative users
webmail.bethel.edu for Academic users
10. To disconnect from CARS, be sure to type E to exit. When the appgate logo is displayed, you may login again, or click on the close box [X] to close the window. Remember to disconnect from your ISP when finished.
