Configuring Outlook Express 6 for Bethel IMAP

To configure Outlook Express (OE) 6 for Bethel IMAP:

  • From the main menu in OE (Outlook Express), select Tools and then Accounts... from the drop down menu.
  • Click the Add button on the right hand side and then select Mail...
  • Type in your name in the display name field and then click Next
  • Type in your Bethel email address and then click Next
  • In the "My incoming mail server is a" drop down menu select IMAP.
  • In the Incoming mail server field, type imap.bethel.edu
  • In the Outgoing mail server field, type smtp.bethel.edu and then click Next

  • OE tries to guess your account name from your email address, so make sure your account name is entered correctly
  • If you want OE to remember your password, type your password and then click Next. If not, just click Next.
  • Click Finish and then click Close on the Account window.
  • A pop up window will come up asking, "Would you like to download folders from the server you just added?" Click Yes.

  • OE will show a pop up window listing your email folders.  Those folders names with an icon to the left them are visible while those folder names without an icon are hidden.  If you double click a folder name then either the icon will appear if there had not been one or the icon will disappear if there had been one.
  • Click OK when done setting which folders you want to show and which folders you want to hide.

  • OE will add your Bethel email folders to the the folder list on the left similar to figure 2 above.  Right click imap.bethel.edu from the folder list and then select Properties.
  • Click on the IMAP tab (figure 3)
  • In the Root folder path: type INBOX. including the period.
  • Confirm that the Store special folders on IMAP server checkbox is checked and that Sent Items is listed in the Sent Items path: field and Drafts is listed in the Drafts path: field.
  • Click OK.
