Windows XP Home/Professional Wireless ResNet Config Guide

This information is no longer accurate do to the fact that Bethel has moved to 802.1X network security, which requires different configuration than was previously required. Please see the Network Page for further information.

  1. Click on the “Start” menu and select “Control Panel.” The Control Panel window will most likely display in Category View. If you do not see “Pick a category” above and to the left of the control panels, select “Switch to Category View” on the upper right side of the Window. Now select “Network and Internet Connections.”


  2. Select “Network Connections” on the lower right side of the Network Internet Connections window.


  3. In the Network Connections window that appears, right click on the “Wireless Area Connection” icon and select “Properties” from the menu.


  4. You should now be looking at the “Wireless Area Connection Properties” window.

  5. Select “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)” and then click on the “Properties” button.

  6. Note: If you do not see “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)” click on the “Install” button. In the window that appears select “Protocol” and click on the “Add” button. In the next window select “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)” and click “OK.” You may be prompted to restart your computer. When done, proceed with step 4.

  7. Select “Obtain IP address automatically” and “Obtain DNS server automatically.” Click “OK” in both windows.

  8. You should see a "Wireless Network Connection" icon in the taskbar by the clock. Right click on the icon and click "View Available Wireless Networks". Select the Network you want to connect to (Typically BU ResNet). Put a check mark by "Allow me to connect to this network". Click "Connect".


  9. Go back to Control Panel and select “Performance and Maintenance.” If you don’t see this option, make sure you are still in “Category View.” Toward the bottom of the window, underneath “or Pick a Control Panel icon,” select “System.” In the System Properties window that appears select the “Computer Name tab.” Type in a description for your computer and then select the “Change” button on the lower right side of the window.

  10. In the “Computer Name Changes” window type your user name in the “Computer name” field. In the bottom of the window select the “Workgroup” button and type your dorm name in UPPERCASE. ex: NELSON


  11. Click OK and restart your computer. After restarting your computer it will work on Bethel’s Network.
